Nuclear/Radioactive Isotope Detection System

The InfrAegis Inc. (Ia) Nuclear/Radioactive Isotope Detection System is based on sophisticated proprietary analysis of radiation detected by thallium-coated sodium iodide crystals. The software algorithms allow the system to distinguish threat isotopes (e.g., cobalt-60, cesium-137, iridium-192, and strontium-90) from isotopes naturally occurring in household items such as fish, bananas, and ceramic tile or those used for medical purposes (e.g., potassium-40, thorium-232, and technetium-99m).

Background radiation is measured every 15 minutes against a standard low-level radiation source within the detector unit to constantly benchmark naturally occurring radiation levels. These factors statistically eliminate the possibility of false positive alarms. The sensor system has centralized detection and monitoring capabilities for identifying both the type and amount of radioactive isotopes. The Nuclear/Radioactive Isotope Detection System works seamlessly without disrupting daily operations and workflow with nuisance false-positives. Alarms occur only when a valid threat is detected through the presence of a threat isotope or an unusually large presence of a non-threat isotope.

For all its sensor-based systems, Ia incorporates a second, independent and redundant alkali metal radiation detection system to further protect against false positives.

Ia has developed algorithms and defined sensitivity levels specific to each application where the technology may be employed (e.g., the timing requirement for detecting radioactive isotopes differs for static handled containers, pedestrians, vehicles, and railcars). The accuracy of the system allows detection of high-speed vehicles and the ability to distinguish the lane in which the vehicle or railcar is traveling. Should a threat be detected, automated user-defined standard operating procedures provide information on material handling, personal protective equipment requirements, and necessary corrective actions.

Ia's detection systems are distinguished in the marketplace because of their concurrent deployment with Ia's integrated Incident Video Synchronization System (IVSS), which is capable of recording multiple streams of digital video in both day and night formats, and because of the continuous monitoring by Ia's Global Operations Monitoring and Analysis Center (GOMAC).

The Nuclear/Radioactive Isotope Detection System is an integral component of Ia's Spreader Bars Security System, Vehicle/Pedestrian/Rail Detection System, and Portable Radioactive Isotope Detection System.
